A HEAD FOR SUCCESS
FOR an award-winning businessman and inspiration to thousands, Terry Hamill did not have an auspicious start in life - he left school with a swimming certificate?
He started a career in the hairdressing salons of his native Glasgow and, as an early example of his drive, became the youngest-ever qualified hairdresser. In 1988, though, he needed a change and sought refuge form the perms and highlights in Greece, where he worked with his brother on a beach renting sunbeds to nudists.
Eventually bored by beach life, he returned to Glasgow and the world of hairdressing, working for the celebrated Wella company and qualifying as their youngest ever colour technician. He also taught hundreds of top hairdressing salons the art of cutting and colouring as the industry emerged from the dodgy perms of the '80s.
Terry was awarded Wella's Hairdressing Technician of the Year by actress Rula Lenska at a glitzy London gala dinner, but change was on the horizon again. At just 20, he moved to Liverpool to run a group of seven salons and while there had his first introduction to the world of motivation and marketing when he listened to his first Anthony Robbins' tape.
"When I heard 'Awaken The Giant Within' I knew my life would never be the same again," said Terry. "I wanted success and all the trimmings, and dreamed of the usual big stuff - cars, houses, late-night champagne bars. Well, money meant different things then."

A chance meeting with the owners of trendy furniture manufacturer Dane brought an invitation for Terry to work with them, helping with their salon group and setting up a training arm. More awards then followed in education and people development, and Dane was voted Furniture Retailer of the Year by the industry's best.
"But I was soon twitching again to do something different ," stated Terry. "So Dane asked me what role in the organisation would make me happy. I opted for their Oz Design Furniture group because of its people-led ethic and they told me to just get the brand out there. So I became the companies' official networker."
However, "with no sales and a laptop full of lukewarm contacts", Terry decided that casual networking was not working. As Fate would have it, at that moment, he met Alistair Salmon of Salmon Assessors at a networking event.
"He asked me what I did, then said he thought he might have someone who could help me," explained Terry. "Alistair told me not to call her as she would call me. I was very sceptical, but when she did actually call, she invited me into the company to make my first sale of £26,000 - which was just incredible."
She suggested Terry go along to a BNI meeting - "which, of course, I thought was at 7pm not 7am." Dressed and shaved, though, he duly appeared at the Manchester venue to join the 30 people already there and chatting happily.
"I just thought 'Oh my God!" - a place where people are out to help each other," said Terry. To reinforce his pleasure in this, Alistair Salmon, the great giver of contacts and referrals, was also there. Terry got the company backing to join BNI that day.
Within a short space of time, like Victor Kyam, he liked the company so much he bought into it and started BNI in Liverpool, which at that time had no business referral groups. After his training at the national office, he began his venture with six people in a small café in the city centre.
Terry told the people there his BNI story and his shared vision of a strong organisation right across Liverpool. Six weeks later, almost 200 people attended the first launches of BNI groups, and from that one meeting sprouted six new groups. Now, the awards included the "Givers Gain" European Director of the Year 2002, among too many to mention.
With the help of his new team, John Haynes, Geoff Jones and Alvin Cooney, Terry built his BNI empire across Lancashire, Scotland, Manchester and Cheshire. And then "because it's 30 degrees in the sun", in Portugal, followed by Brazil, also becoming the European coach for new directors in countries including Germany, Switzerland and Holland.
Throughout his unusual and dramatic rise in the business world, Terry has had a strong companion at his side, wife Elaine. The arrival of little Lottie in 2002 made him reassess his life/work balance, but a business coach helped him master time and team management.
As a result, he built another terrific brand with the Catalyst group of companies which include land acquirement, industrial property development, software e-marketing, public speaking - all now with that key ingredient to allow life and work to move along comfortably together.
In 2005, young Max Hamill arrived in the world. Just over a year later, Terry was invited by Dr Ivan Misner and Norm Dominguez - the leaders of BNI worldwide - to join the BNI executive team and take responsibility for growth and communication for the complete European operation. Travelling across Europe searching for best practice to help members make more profit from referrals.

To date, Terry has spoken in front of thousands of business audiences, coached and motivated hundreds of BNI directors globally, and created an amazing fund of ideas to improve business performance - and yet still have the time to spend with the precious family unit.
A humble and grounded man, Terry is owed a huge debt by the business community for the determination and positive drive that he happily shares with others. At meetings and seminars, he is the first to shake a hand or greet a newcomer and people always remember the first time they met him.
Success has nothing to do with money, although it helps if you've got it.
